Figure 8 Knot - On a Bight

Canyoneering Knots

The Figure-8 On-A-Bight, is used in Canyoneering primarily for creating a “load carrying” loop.  It is a safe knot to rappel on, to tie yourself into an anchor point, and to lower or raise people and gear.

To tie, simply make a bight on the rope followed by tying a Figure 8 knot.

Pros:

  • Creates a secure loop for clipping into anchors or harnesses.

  • Holds strong under load and is easy to untie afterward.

Cons:

  • Bulky, which can be a challenge in systems requiring compact knots.

Caution:

  • Always inspect for proper dressing to avoid weakening the knot.

Canyoneering Usage Examples:

  • Creating a secure loop for connecting a rope to a carabiner when setting up a belay anchor or rappel system.

  • Attaching personal safety tethers to anchors during canyon traverses or while waiting at rappel stations.
