Important disclaimer & personal responsibility
Canyoneering and outdoor adventuring are inherently dangerous, high-risk activities that can result in serious injury or death. All beta, route descriptions, GPS coordinates, and safety advice shared by users on this forum are provided strictly for informational and educational purposes.
Outdoor conditions change rapidly. To the extent permitted by applicable law, this forum, its owner, and its moderators assume no responsibility or legal liability for inaccurate or outdated information, or for accidents, injuries, or deaths resulting from the use of information found here.
You are entirely responsible for your own safety, gear, preparation, and judgment. A forum post is not a substitute for current research, appropriate instruction, or decisions made in the canyon. Use this website at your own risk.
Community culture & behavior
- A family-friendly space. This forum should be accessible to outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. No nudity, sexually explicit content, or pornography of any kind is permitted.
- Keep it clean. Excessive profanity, vulgarity, and crude language are not allowed. Keep your language constructive.
- Debate ideas; respect people. Canyoneering styles, ethics, and gear choices can spark passionate disagreement. Opposing ideas and feeling angry or frustrated during a debate are okay. Personal insults, hate, threats, doxxing, cyberstalking, and harassment are not. Targeted intimidation will result in an immediate, permanent ban and may be reported to law enforcement.
- No violence or gore. Do not post images, videos, or descriptions of severe accidents, gore, or graphic violence.
- Respect the land. Promote Leave No Trace ethics and responsible canyoneering. Respect closures, permits, private property, cultural sites, and sensitive environments.
Choose the right conversation
Keep canyoneering discussions focused on Utah. Use Trip Reports for completed outings, Canyoneering Gear for equipment, Beta for route questions and observations, News for sourced updates, and Meet-up/Invites for plans. General Chat (Non-Canyoneering) is for conversations outside the sport.
Trip reports & beta guidelines
- Include the date and conditions. Clearly state your trip or observation date, the Utah region, and the canyon when appropriate under the location-sharing rules below. Describe observed water levels, anchor quality, and recent weather impacts. Separate firsthand observations from secondhand information. Conditions change fast, and outdated information can be dangerous.
- Focus on narrative and conditions. Share the story of your trip and the objective hazards you encountered, rather than step-by-step, hand-holding route instructions for wild canyons.
- Explain your group’s experience. If a route felt “easy” or “dangerous,” provide context about your group’s skills and experience so readers can better understand your assessment.
GPS coordinates & location sharing
- Protect fragile environments. Do not post exact GPS coordinates, GPX files, or detailed maps for pristine, sensitive, or unpublished canyons. This helps limit overcrowding, resource degradation, and social trails. Discussing general regions and well-established public routes is acceptable.
- Check photos before sharing. Digital photographs may contain embedded EXIF metadata revealing exact GPS locations. Remove sensitive location data before sharing an image. Moderators may remove images or links that reveal sensitive locations, or strip metadata where technically possible. Do not assume metadata is removed automatically; this forum currently displays externally hosted images and does not provide a photo-upload service.
Commercial guiding & solicitations
- No unpermitted commercial recruiting. Do not solicit clients, sell guided trips, or market commercial outdoor guiding services unless the forum owner has recognized you as an approved partner and you hold the permits required for the activity.
- Respect permits and regulations. When discussing commercial guided trips, respect the rules of the relevant land manager, including the BLM, National Park Service, or Forest Service. Promoting illegal or unpermitted commercial guiding on public lands is prohibited.
- Be transparent. Disclose commercial interests or other connections when recommending equipment, services, or organizations.
Self-promotion
- Contribute before you promote. You may share your own non-commercial content, such as personal YouTube videos or blog posts, only if you are an active, contributing member.
- Keep it infrequent. Self-promotion must be rare. If your account primarily exists to drive traffic, views, or monetization elsewhere, your links will be removed. Spam and misleading promotions are not allowed.
- Moderator discretion applies. The moderation team decides what qualifies as infrequent, constructive participation.
Privacy, photographs & meet-ups
Post only text and photographs you have permission to share. Ask before identifying other people. Do not publish someone else’s home address, phone number, private messages, or other personal information.
For invitations, state the proposed date, general area, plan, required experience, and group size. Discuss expectations before committing. An invitation does not establish anyone’s training or ability. Use public meeting places and keep private contact details out of public posts.
This forum is not monitored for emergencies. Contact emergency services when help is needed.
Moderation & content removal
- First contributions are reviewed. New members’ first contributions wait for moderation before appearing publicly. Post once; repeated submissions will not speed up review.
- Administrative discretion. The owner and moderators reserve the right to edit, move, lock, or delete any content at any time, for any reason, without prior warning. They may also restrict, suspend, or ban accounts.
- Decisions are final. Publicly arguing about a removed post or a user ban is grounds for account suspension.
- Participation is a privilege. Membership does not create an entitlement to publish content or continue participating.
Account emails & getting help
Check Spam or Junk if an account email is missing. Registration and password-reset emails may land there, including in Gmail. Look for the email after requesting it. If you find a legitimate Canyoneering101 account email in Spam, mark it “Not spam” to help future messages reach your inbox.
