Hello everyone!
My name is Brett Johnson, and I'm the creator of Canyoneering101.com
I was known as "jman" back on the Bogley.com days and canyoneering has always been an obsession ever since I got introduced to Little Wildhorse Canyon in the San Rafael Swell in 1994 when my mother took us kids through it during a Spring Break. Year after year for that Spring Break as a kid in elementary student I LOVED going there and exploring the nearby Goblin Valley State Park.
Then in 1999, I was introduced to a hike called the "Subway" in Zion National Park. I had NO idea that something like this could exist where you go THROUGH a slot canyon that had running-water in a beautiful oasis in the blazing hot sun.
Since then, I have become "obsessed" with canyoneering and discovering everything about it and sharing it with everyone that I know.
I have taken international visitors through slot canyons, many friends and family through the "mecca" of slot canyons, known as Utah.
I never thought that one day I would be creating my own canyoneering site and forum, but here we are! I have so much to share, most of it for free, and some I will post on Canyoneering101's online store (at a future date!).
I hope all of you can stay, chat, learn more about this sport, and maybe more importantly, be good stewards of the canyons, be their advocates, share the sport with other interested people but with safety and self-autonomy in mind. More and more people are being introduced to this sport and they have crazy stories to share about descending it on bad anchors, running out of daylight, having an accident, and worse. That does NOT need to happen! My goal with this website is to hopefully change that, and implement a beginner standardization of the sport.
Feel free to reach out to in Private Message or by email (i wont' give it out here) if you'd like to contribute, sponsor the website, or help in any meaningful way, but unfortunately, you won't get financially reimbursed for helping currently.
