Figure 8 Knot - Follow-through

Canyoneering Knots

The Figure 8 Knot – Follow-through, is used in Canyoneering for creating a “load carrying” loop.

Once tied correctly, the follow-through versus the bight will allow you tie the Figure 8 know when the LOOP you are wanting to attach to is already there.

With this knot, you will be able to tie it into things such as harnesses, backpacks, anchors, and even people (like a kid who is too light to rappel).

NOTE – if you are LOWERING people, you will need to research into “belaying” people and need to find the best or appropriate way in doing so as it depends on the persons weight, the height of the rappel, how much rope you have, and what canyoneering descender devices you have with you.

Pros:

  • Useful for tying loops around fixed objects like anchors or harnesses.

  • Easy to inspect for proper alignment, ensuring safety under load.

Cons:

  • More time-consuming to tie than a Figure 8 on a Bight.

Caution:

  • Inspect alignment carefully to avoid compromising knot strength.

Canyoneering Usage Examples:

  • Tying a loop around fixed objects like tree roots, boulders, or anchor rings for a secure rappel setup.

  • Securing rope systems in areas where direct attachment to a structure is required, such as in multi-pitch canyon descents.
