Canyon Access & Land Types
Module 12
Canyoneering access depends on land type:
-
Federal: Includes BLM, Forest Service (FS), and National Park Service (NPS) lands.
-
State: Governed by individual states; access may vary.
-
Private: Owned by individuals/entities; permission is absolutely required.
Federal Lands:
-
BLM (Bureau of Land Management): Open for canyoneering without permits or fees.
-
FS (Forest Service): Access varies; research required.
-
NPS (National Park System): Permits often required (e.g., Zion or Arches National Parks). Violations will lead to fines or court appearances.
State Parks: Access and regulations vary. For example, Goblin Valley State Park requires a permit and fee.
Private Land: Permission is mandatory. Trespassing harms the community and may permanently close access. Some incredible canyons exist on private land; respectful outreach is crucial.
Join the Coalition of American Canyoneers to support canyon access and preservation. Membership is currently free! Always follow regulations and promote responsible use to ensure access for future adventurers.
