To fill in the gaps...
Module 36
Hiking and canyoneering are great opportunities to bond with your group. Use the time to engage in light, fun, and/or meaningful conversations that can pass the hours and strengthen connections.
Here are a few topics to keep in the back of your head:
Get to Know Each Other:
Start with personal stories. Ask about each other’s backgrounds, where they’re from, and what brought them to canyoneering. Sharing experiences can create a relaxed, enjoyable and personable atmosphere.
Favorite Stories:
Everyone has memorable stories. Share funny, scary, or inspiring adventures you’ve had on past hikes or canyoneering trips. These tales can build camaraderie and laughter.
Other Hobbies:
Discuss hobbies beyond hiking and canyoneering. From cooking to photography or even unique interests like collecting rocks or bird watching, learning about others’ passions at the minimum passes the time, but also grows comradery and trust within the group. Also, you may find out that – hey, we are not so different from each other after all.
Canyoneering Experience:
Ask how long they’ve been canyoneering, and what they’ve learned over the years. Share tips and advice, especially if you or they are all seasoned explorers or new to the sport.
Space, Science, and the Universe:
For those who enjoy deep discussions, dive into space exploration, recent scientific discoveries, or theories about the universe. These topics can spark fascinating debates or moments of awe.
Politics, Religion, and Meaning of Life:
If the group is comfortable, explore weightier topics like politics, religion, or the meaning of life. Be mindful of each person’s preferences — keep it respectful and open.
These conversations not only help pass time but also (hopefully) create stronger bonds within the group, making the canyon experience even more memorable. Who knows – maybe this new group will be your “new” canyoneering friends group? Or, maybe you will get invited to more canyoneering trips? (Or, maybe you won’t, but you at least will possibly know why!)
