Intro to Ascending

Module 28

Basic Procedure for Rope Ascending:

1. Preparation: Ensure your ascending system includes a top-handled ascender and a foot loop or secondary ascender. Check all equipment for wear and tear before starting.

2. Attachment: Clip the top-handled ascender onto the rope and secure your harness to it with a locking carabiner. Attach a foot loop to the ascender or use a secondary ascender for additional support.

3. Movement Technique: Push the top ascender upward until it locks, then stand in the foot loop to lift yourself. Slide the bottom or secondary ascender up to reset your position. Repeat the motion in a steady rhythm, using your legs for most of the work to reduce arm fatigue.

Pro Tips:

Practice First: Ascending is physically demanding; train on a static rope in a controlled environment before attempting in a canyon.

Carry a Backup: Always have a secondary system like a Prusik or an autoblock for added safety. Ascending may not be used often but mastering it can save your life or prevent a trip from turning into a rescue.
