Thank you for trusting me enough to spend your time with this book. Canyoneering101 started because I wished there had been one place where a beginner could start – something that explained not only what to do, but why it matters.

I do not expect you to agree with every opinion or technique in these pages. Canyoneering has different systems and very experienced people who sometimes do things differently. That is okay. My hope is that this book gives you the foundation to ask better questions, make more objective decisions, and recognize when you still have more to learn.

If this book helps you make one safer decision, rebuild one questionable anchor, check one more weather forecast, carry one piece of gear you end up needing, or speak up when something feels wrong – then it did exactly what I hoped it would do.

Now get out there. Take the photos. Laugh when the 'casual' approach turns into a slog. Help the person behind you. Protect the canyon. Give back to the community. And when someone new to the sport asks you a question someday, remember that you were new once too.

A humble ask is that whoever you bought this from please give it your honest rating and review (the good and the bad) so I can improve for another revision years from now, especially as canyoneering technology improves and our culture changes.
