13 Internet vs. Professional Instruction & Risk Management

Books, websites, forums, videos, and social media can be extremely useful. You are reading one of those resources right now. They can explain terminology, show systems, introduce equipment, help you understand canyon ratings, and expose you to ideas that would otherwise take years to encounter.

But there is a limit to what any screen or book can do. Canyoneering is physical. Rope systems need to be tied, loaded, inspected, adjusted, and practiced. Edge transitions feel different when you are actually standing at an edge. Real anchors do not always look like the nice examples in a diagram.

01 Why the Internet Is Not Enough by Itself

LIMITED CONTEXT

A video can show one clean example without showing all the canyon-specific variables that changed the decision.

NO FEEDBACK

A webpage cannot look at your knot, body position, rappel setup, or anchor and tell you what you personally did wrong.

FALSE CONFIDENCE

Watching somebody perform a skill can feel familiar enough that you think you can do it—even when you have never practiced it under load.

I will do my best throughout Canyoneering101 to provide useful lecture-style instruction and explain why things matter. But I do not want the existence of this book to accidentally convince a beginner that reading it is the same thing as hands-on competence.

02 A Good Rule

Your first real technical canyon should not be the first time you have ever used your rappel device, tied the knots you need, clipped into an anchor, or practiced the systems your group is relying on.

03 Why Hands-On Training Matters

TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT

• Practice rappelling, knot tying, route finding, and equipment use.

• Learn how systems behave while loaded—not just how they look in a picture.

• Receive immediate correction before a bad habit becomes normal.

• Build confidence through repetition in controlled conditions.

REAL-WORLD JUDGMENT

• Discuss flash floods, equipment failure, and other real scenarios.

• Adapt techniques to different terrain and canyon problems.

• Learn permit, access, ethics, and Leave No Trace considerations.

• Meet mentors and other people you may eventually canyon with.

04 If Professional Training Is Not Available Locally

Do not let distance become an excuse to learn nothing. Start by connecting with experienced canyoneers and established communities. Ask questions. Read trip reports. Attend workshops when they are available. Practice skills in a controlled environment with somebody who knows what correct technique looks like.

• Join online forums or communities and pay attention to the problems experienced canyoneers discuss—not just the successful trip photos.

• Look for workshops, courses, or educational opportunities through canyoneering organizations.

• Introduce yourself to local groups and be clear that you are trying to learn, not simply looking for somebody to lead you through a hard canyon.

• Be objective about conflicting advice. Different people may use different systems; ask why a method is being recommended.

The internet is excellent at giving you information. A good instructor can watch you use that information.

05 Online Communities, Forums & Shared Experience

Online communities can be great places to ask questions, find partners, compare systems, read trip reports, and—especially—learn from incident discussions. The communities already referenced throughout Canyoneering101 include:

06 Objectivity Also Applies Online

A confident answer on social media is not automatically a correct answer. Ask follow-up questions. Compare advice. Understand the context. When in doubt, ask a more experienced canyoneer or qualified instructor before blindly copying a technique.

07 The Goal: Build Skill AND Judgment

Use books and the internet to build knowledge. Use experienced people and professional instruction to test and refine that knowledge. Then practice until the skill is something you can perform. But technical skill is only half of the equation. You also need the judgment to decide when a system, route, condition, or group is becoming too risky.

That combination is far more valuable than choosing one side of the “internet versus instruction” argument. They are different tools. Risk management is what ties them together: learn what can go wrong, recognize it early, reduce the exposure, and keep reassessing as the canyon changes.

Learn it. Practice it. Get corrected. Manage the risk.

08 Risk Management: Reduce Risk Before You Lose Your Options

Canyoneering is inherently dangerous. Risk management does not make a canyon “safe,” and it does not eliminate uncertainty. The goal is to identify hazards early enough that you still have choices—before a small problem becomes a committed problem.

A practical way to think about risk is to consider both likelihood and consequence. Something can be unlikely and still deserve serious attention if the consequence is catastrophic. Likewise, a minor hazard that happens repeatedly can become a major problem over a long day.

09 Identify → Evaluate → Mitigate → Reassess

Across National Park Service safety guidance, ACA skills checklists, equipment-manufacturer technical guidance, and canyoneering community incident discussions, the same pattern keeps showing up: notice the hazard, do something meaningful about it, and then check again to see whether your plan is still good.

10 Three Places Risk Comes From

ENVIRONMENTAL

Weather and flash floods, cold water, heat, loose rock, water flow, darkness, route-finding, remote terrain, and changing canyon conditions.

TECHNICAL

Anchors, webbing, rope condition and length, rigging, rappel friction, edge transitions, stuck ropes, potholes, communication, and equipment failure.

HUMAN

Experience mismatch, fatigue, dehydration, fear, complacency, overconfidence, group pressure, poor communication, rushing, and FOMO.

THE IMPORTANT PART

A hazard does not become safer because you really want the trip to happen. The canyon does not care how far you drove, how hard the permit was to get, or how excited the group is.

11 The Risk Management Cycle

I like to keep risk management simple enough that it can actually be used in the field. You do not need a spreadsheet at every rappel. You need a repeatable way to stop, think, and make a better decision.

1. IDENTIFY & EVALUATE

• What can hurt us here?

• What changed from the beta or plan?

• How likely is the hazard right now?

• If it happens, how serious is the consequence?

2. MITIGATE & REASSESS

• Can we avoid the hazard entirely?

• Can we reduce exposure or add a backup?

• Did the control actually reduce the risk?

• Is the remaining—or residual—risk acceptable to the whole team?

12 Controls That Actually Change the Risk

Good risk controls change the situation—not just how confident you feel about it. Choosing another canyon, waiting for better weather, starting earlier, bringing appropriate thermal protection, rebuilding a questionable anchor, using a more appropriate rigging system, adding a backup rope, or taking an alternate exit all change the risk in a measurable way.

REDUCE THE CHANCE OF A PROBLEM

• Pick a canyon that matches the group.

• Avoid questionable weather.

• Use current beta and verify it.

• Perform buddy checks.

• Practice technical systems before the trip.

REDUCE THE CONSEQUENCE IF IT HAPPENS

• Carry first-aid and communication gear.

• Know egress / escape options.

• Use Google Earth to visualize the approach, canyon, and exit. Look at the drainage for the canyon.

• Use appropriate thermal protection.

• Have rescue and ascending capability in the group.

RISK STACKING

One yellow flag may be manageable. Six yellow flags can become a red day. Old beta + late start + cold water + a tired beginner + a questionable anchor + no reliable communication is not six separate problems—it is one fragile plan.

13 Human Factors: The Risk You Bring with You

Some of the hardest canyon hazards are not made of sandstone or water. They come from the way people think when they are excited, tired, embarrassed, rushed, or committed to a plan. A technically strong group can still make poor decisions.

“WE CAME THIS FAR…”

Time and effort already spent are not reasons to continue into worse conditions. The safer choice does not care about sunk cost.

“THE LEADER SAYS IT’S FINE.”

Experience matters, but nobody is immune to mistakes. Everyone still gets a voice—and a concern deserves to be heard.

“WE NEED TO HURRY.”

Rushing creates its own hazards: missed checks, sloppy rigging, poor communication, and bad decisions made to save a few minutes.

“WE’VE DONE THIS BEFORE.”

Familiarity can create complacency. Anchors, water, weather, group members, and canyon conditions may be different this time.

“EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING IT.”

Other groups do not know your team, skills, gear, or comfort level. Their decision is not automatically your decision.

“I DON’T WANT TO LOOK SCARED.”

Silence can hide useful information. Fear, cold, fatigue, confusion, or concern should be communicated before they become a rescue problem.

14 The 60-Second Risk Reset

Stop And Ask

• What has changed since our last plan?
• What do we KNOW versus what are we assuming?
• Who is cold, tired, dehydrated, injured, scared, or unusually quiet?
• What is our next escape, backup, or lower-consequence option?
• What specific condition would make us turn around or stop?

This is where the team concept from Module 9 matters. Risk management works better when people speak up. If one person notices the weather building, an anchor moving, a teammate fading, or a route problem, that information belongs to the whole group.

15 Before You Drop In: A Five-Minute Safety Brief

The ACA Canyon Leader skills checklist includes a pre-trip safety briefing covering things such as medical concerns, weather, emergency communication, first-aid location, and the egress plan. That is a simple habit worth mirroring for recreational groups.

TRAILHEAD / DROP-IN CHECK

• Weather and flash-flood potential

• Current canyon / water conditions

• Medical or physical concerns

• Longest rappel and rope plan

• Thermal protection and water

• Expected pace, daylight, and exit time

EMERGENCY PLAN

• Who has a satellite communicator / PLB?

• Where is the first-aid kit?

• What is the egress / escape options?

• What is Plan B if the canyon conditions change?

• Who can ascend a rope or assist a stuck rappeller?

• When do we call it and turn around, if possible?

16 Then Do It Again at the Rappel

ACA Sovereign-level guidance explicitly calls for Partner Checks at initial gear-up and at every rappel. You do not need to make this ceremonial. Make it normal. Before somebody commits to the edge, verify the pieces that can ruin the day.

17 Rappel Buddy Check

Harness and attachment → anchor, webbing, hardware → rope length and path → correct rigging and strand → descender threaded correctly → connector closed and locked → controlled weight/function check while independently protected → tether managed → loose items secured → communication and landing clear.

Petzl’s anchor-inspection guidance reinforces the same mindset: existing cord or webbing must be inspected before use, including areas hidden by the rock. If there is doubt, replace it. The principle is bigger than the specific anchor—do not outsource your safety to the person who was there before you.

18 Risk Management Does Not Stop Once You Enter

The most important risk assessment is not the one you did at home three days ago. It is the one you keep doing as the canyon unfolds. Conditions change. People change. Information changes. Your plan should be allowed to change too.

19 Watch for Changes That Matter

ENVIRONMENT / ROUTE

• Cloud buildup, thunder, rain upstream

• Rising water, stronger current, debris, or suddenly dirty water

• Colder conditions than expected

• Route-finding uncertainty

• Unexpected anchors, rockfall, or changed obstacles

TEAM / SYSTEM

• Pace falling behind the plan

• Somebody becoming cold, tired, quiet, confused, or dehydrated

• Repeated rigging or communication mistakes

• Missing / damaged critical gear

• A rescue skill the group suddenly needs—but does not have

20 Proceed, Modify, or Abort

PROCEED

Conditions still match the plan, the team is functioning well, and the controls you expected are working. Keep reassessing.

MODIFY

Slow down, change rigging, rebuild the anchor, add thermal layers, redistribute gear, use an alternate exit, or change the objective.

ABORT / DO NOT ENTER

Weather threatens the canyon, a critical system cannot be made acceptable, the group is losing the ability to self-rescue, or the remaining risk is no longer worth it.

NPS LESSON

Zion National Park repeatedly gives a simple message for narrow canyons: check current conditions and flash-flood potential, have a backup plan, and if bad weather threatens—do not enter. Once you are committed inside a slot, your options can shrink instantly.

21 *Case Study: Risk Stacking In Pine Creek — 2018

In March 2018, eight canyoneers in Pine Creek became wet, borderline hypothermic, and too exhausted to continue. NPS reported that the group had inadequate footwear and gloves and was using 3 mm “farmer John” wetsuits when insulated dry suits were more appropriate for the ice-cold pools and conditions. A heavy snowstorm then brought sub-freezing temperatures, and Pine Creek flash flooded while rescuers worked through the night to extract the group.

Lesson Learned: Cold water + marginal thermal protection + fatigue + deteriorating weather can compound until a group loses its ability to self-rescue.

22 A Simple Risk-Management Standard for Canyoneering101

I am not trying to invent another official canyoneering standard. This is simply the practical mindset I want a beginner to carry through with the rest of this book:

23 Before The Canyon

Research the route. Verify the weather. Match the canyon to the team. Bring the right equipment. Know the exits. Identify the biggest hazards and decide what you are going to do about them. Visualize the approach, canyon, and exit in Google Earth.

24 In The Canyon

Keep checking the team, conditions, anchors, rigging, water, daylight, and your assumptions. Treat new information as a reason to update the plan—not as an inconvenience.

25 When Something “Feels” Wrong

Stop. Communicate. Verify. Add a control, change the plan, or back out if that option still exists. Do not let ego, FOMO, or the fact that “we are already here” make the decision for you.

Good canyoneering means reducing risk and recognizing problems early enough that you still have useful options. Risk cannot be eliminated.
