28 How to Ascend a Rope
Ascending a rope is not something most canyoneers use on every trip, but it is an important backup skill. Retreat, a missed station, a changed plan, or a rescue problem can suddenly make “going up” important. Do not assume a rope that became stuck during retrieval is safe to climb; V7 specifically warns that a stuck strand can release unexpectedly.
Zion National Park calls the ability to stop, move up, or move down while hanging mid-rope a lifesaving skill that must be learned before you need it. That is the mindset for this module: do not make your first real rope ascent happen when you are tired, cold, and stranded in a canyon.
THE GOAL: Learn a simple, repeatable ascent system. Practice it low and controlled until you can set it up, weight it, move efficiently, and transition safely without guessing.
WHAT ASCENDING ACTUALLY IS
Rope ascending—also called jugging or jumaring—is moving upward on a fixed rope using devices or friction hitches that slide when unloaded and grip when weighted. The basic rhythm is simple: move one attachment upward, stand up, move the other attachment upward, sit back, and repeat.
MECHANICAL SYSTEM
Two compatible rope clamps/ascenders provide efficient progress. At least one normally carries a foot loop; both life-support connections must be properly attached to the harness according to the equipment instructions.
FRICTION-HITCH SYSTEM
Two correctly tied and compatible friction hitches can serve as an emergency/manual ascent system. It is slower and more tiring, but useful because cord is compact and versatile.
PRACTICE FIRST: This is a hands-on skill. Use this sequence as a learning and practice guide—not as permission to improvise an unfamiliar ascent system in a canyon.
THE SYSTEM: WHAT YOU NEED
The original version of this module used a top handled ascender plus a foot loop or secondary ascender. That remains the core idea, but the important safety upgrade is redundancy: Petzl specifically recommends two rope clamps for a fixed-rope ascent, with both connected to the harness, rather than trusting a single moving rope clamp.
OPTION A — TWO ROPE CLAMPS
Two handled ascenders, or a handled ascender paired with another compatible progression ascender. One is the upper attachment; the other provides the lower/body attachment and/or foot-loop progression.
OPTION B — TWO FRICTION HITCHES
Two properly sized Prusik/Klemheist-type loops on a compatible rope. One connects high to the harness; the second supports the foot loop / lower progression point.
MINIMUM KIT
• A properly fitted canyoneering/climbing harness and helmet.
• Two independent rope-grabbing attachments suitable for the rope diameter and condition.
• Rated locking connectors and properly rated tethers/PAS or slings configured for the chosen devices.
• A foot loop or adjustable sling long enough to stand fully and efficiently.
• A fixed rope and anchor you have already verified; do not practice on a questionable canyon anchor.
• Gloves are optional, but they can make repeated practice more comfortable.
COMPATIBILITY MATTERS: Ascenders have specified rope-diameter ranges and attachment instructions. Wet, sandy, muddy, icy, stiff, or unusually small rope can change performance. Read the manufacturer instructions for the exact device you carry.
BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE GROUND
Most beginner problems come from poor setup, not from the actual stand-slide-repeat motion. Build the system while you can still stand comfortably and see every connection.

VERIFY THE ROPE AND ANCHOR — Know exactly which rope you are ascending, where and how it is secured, and whether both strands are available when relevant. Do not ascend a rope simply because it is stuck. Identify and protect abrasion points before loading the rope, and avoid ascending through moving water.

INSTALL BOTH ASCENDING ATTACHMENTS — Orient mechanical devices exactly as their manufacturer requires, or tie both friction hitches correctly. Confirm each one grips when weighted and slides only when intentionally unloaded.

CONNECT BOTH TO YOUR HARNESS — Use the intended harness attachment point and rated connectors/tethers. Keep the connection lengths short enough that neither ascender can move beyond your reach.

BUILD THE FOOT LOOP — Attach the foot loop to the progression ascender. Adjust it so you can stand nearly upright without locking your knee or pulling the ascender into your face.

CONTROL LOOSE GEAR — Tuck straps, hair, clothing, hydration hoses, and dangling equipment away from cams, hitches, carabiners, and the rope path.

WEIGHT-TEST LOW — Sit gently into the system while still close to the ground. Confirm both attachments hold, connectors are locked, the foot loop is usable, and nothing cross-loads or binds.

TWO-ASCENDER METHOD: THE FIRST FOUR MOVES
Once the system is correct, the motion becomes repetitive. Do not pull yourself upward with your arms. Your arms position the devices; your legs do the lifting.

START SEATED / WEIGHTED — Let the lower/body attachment hold your weight. Keep the upper ascender within comfortable reach; do not slide it so high that you cannot operate it.

SLIDE THE UPPER ASCENDER UP — While it is unloaded, move it upward smoothly. Stop before fully extending your arm. Verify the cam/catch is fully engaged.

PLACE WEIGHT IN THE FOOT LOOP — Bring your foot underneath you. Keep your knee and hips aligned rather than pushing far away from the rope.

STAND UP — Drive with your leg and rise toward the upper ascender. Keep your body relatively close to the rope; pulling hard with your arms wastes energy.

EFFICIENCY TIP: Think “stand, not pull.” If your forearms are doing most of the work, shorten the movement, improve foot-loop length, and bring your body closer to the rope.
TWO-ASCENDER METHOD: FINISH THE CYCLE

WHILE STANDING, UNWEIGHT THE LOWER ATTACHMENT — Your upper ascender is now carrying the load. Keep the system controlled; never create slack that could become a fall.

SLIDE THE LOWER / SECONDARY ASCENDER UP — Move it toward your harness/body position. Do not jam one device directly into the other; leave enough room to operate the cams.

SIT BACK GENTLY — Transfer weight onto the lower/body attachment. Confirm it is holding before relaxing your stance.

MOVE THE UPPER ASCENDER AGAIN — Slide it upward to begin the next cycle.

REPEAT IN A STEADY RHYTHM — Upper up → stand → lower up → sit. Small, repeatable movements beat giant lunges.

ARRIVE CONTROLLED — Near the top, slow down. Connect directly to the secure anchor/safe station before removing either ascender from the rope.

DO NOT FALL ON ASCENDERS: Keep slack out of your attachment system. Rope clamps are progression devices—not an invitation to climb above them and shock-load the system.
THE RHYTHM: MAKE YOUR LEGS DO THE WORK
Ascending can be exhausting if the system is badly adjusted. The goal is a compact “inchworm” motion rather than repeated pull-ups.
GOOD BODY POSITION
Hips near the rope, foot beneath the body, relaxed grip, short device movements, and a nearly straight standing leg. Let the skeleton and leg muscles carry the effort.
ENERGY-WASTING POSITION
Foot far forward, hips hanging away from the rope, upper ascender out of reach, long lunges, bent arms, and repeatedly pulling the body upward with the biceps.
PACK MANAGEMENT
A heavy canyon pack can pull you backward and make free-hanging ascents miserable. If your system and situation allow it, manage the pack so it does not interfere with the ascenders or rope path. Do not invent a pack-lowering or hauling arrangement while suspended unless you have practiced it.
EDGES & OVERHANGS
Free-hanging rope is often easier to ascend than a rope that drags across an edge. Near lips, constrictions, and abrasive sandstone, movement of a loaded rope can increase wear. Petzl specifically warns that ascending or otherwise moving on a fixed rope increases its vulnerability to abrasion at rub points.
EDGE TRANSITIONS: Getting your body over a lip can be harder than the vertical ascent itself. Practice low edge transitions with competent instruction. Do not remove an ascender early just because you can touch the top.
EMERGENCY ALTERNATIVE: TWO FRICTION HITCHES
Mechanical ascenders are faster and easier, but compact cord loops give you a useful backup option. A friction hitch should grip the rope when loaded and slide when intentionally unweighted. Exact cord diameter, hitch choice, number of wraps, rope condition, and material all affect how it behaves.
IMPORTANT: Do not copy a wrap count blindly from a photograph. Build and test the hitch using the exact rope and cord combination you carry. A hitch that slides too easily—or locks so tightly you cannot move it—is not ready for canyon use.

TIE / INSTALL THE UPPER HITCH — Connect it to your harness with an appropriately rated tether or connector so it remains reachable.

TIE / INSTALL THE LOWER HITCH — Attach the foot loop to this hitch and connect the system as required so you are not relying on a single attachment.

WEIGHT-TEST BOTH HITCHES — Confirm each grips before leaving the ground.

START ON THE UPPER HITCH — With both hitches connected to your harness, sit gently on the upper hitch so the lower hitch and foot loop are unloaded.

ADVANCE THE LOWER HITCH, THEN STAND — Slide the unloaded lower hitch upward, verify that it grips, and stand in its foot loop. This unloads the upper hitch.

ADVANCE THE UPPER HITCH, THEN SIT — While supported by the lower hitch and foot loop, slide the unloaded upper hitch upward. Verify its grip, sit gently onto it, and repeat. Never force a loaded hitch to slide.

COMMON PROBLEMS & WHAT THEY USUALLY MEAN
ASCENDER WILL NOT SLIDE
It may still be loaded, misoriented, jammed against another device/knot, contaminated, or incompatible with the rope. Stop; do not force the cam.
ASCENDER SLIDES BUT WILL NOT GRIP
Stop immediately. Check orientation, cam engagement, rope diameter/condition, contamination, and device condition. Revert to a safe supported position.
UPPER ASCENDER IS OUT OF REACH
The tether/device was advanced too far. Prevent this by sizing the tether and keeping movements short. Never deliberately disconnect from your only secure attachment to reach it.
YOU ARE EXHAUSTED QUICKLY
Foot loop is often too long/short, hips are too far from the rope, pack is pulling you backward, or you are using your arms instead of standing with your leg.
ROPE IS BOUNCING / HARD TO FEED
At the bottom of a long free-hanging rope, the rope may need tension below the lower device to feed smoothly. Practice this with a partner in a controlled environment.
FRICTION HITCH LOCKS SOLID
Unload it before trying to move it. Hitch geometry, cord/rope diameter, material, wetness, grit, and wrap count all affect release. Do not wait until an emergency to discover your combination jams.
STOP AND RESET: If the system is behaving differently than it did in practice, do not “muscle through it.” Get stable, reassess every attachment, and solve the problem before continuing upward.
STARTING MID-RAPPEL IS A DIFFERENT SKILL
A planned ascent from the ground is the easiest place to learn. Converting from rappel to ascent while hanging is more complex because the rappel device is already loaded, your body may be free-hanging, and you must transfer weight without ever losing secure attachment.
That changeover is exactly the kind of skill that belongs in supervised practice and companion-rescue training. Module 38 introduces beginner canyon-rescue thinking; this module intentionally focuses on mastering the ascent motion itself first.
DO NOT SKIP THE FOUNDATION: If you cannot comfortably ascend a clean, pre-rigged fixed rope from the ground, you are not ready to learn a hanging rappel-to-ascent changeover.
WHEN YOU REACH THE TOP

Stop below the anchor where you can still operate both ascenders comfortably.

Connect your PAS/tether directly to the secure anchor or designated safe station.

Weight-test that direct connection before changing anything else.

Remove the ascenders one at a time according to their instructions while remaining secured.

Control the rope and your gear so nothing is dropped onto teammates below.
6
Only leave the station after the rope system and the next movement plan are understood.
BEGINNER PRACTICE PROGRESSION
You do not need a 200-foot free-hanging rope to learn this. In fact, that is a terrible place to start. Build the skill progressively.

□ | Practice a short free-hanging ascent with a competent instructor/partner and backup. |
□ | Practice a controlled top arrival and direct connection to an anchor before removing devices. |
□ | Repeat while wearing the pack and clothing you actually use in canyons. |
□ | Only after the basic ascent is automatic: learn rappel-to-ascent changeovers, knot/rebelay passing, and rescue applications with hands-on instruction. |
PRE-CANYON ASCENDING CHECK
Before committing to a canyon where retreat, rope problems, or rescue could require an ascent, make sure “I have ascenders” is not the same thing as “I know how to use them.”

REMEMBER: Carrying rescue gear does not create rescue capability. Equipment becomes useful only after the setup, movement, and failure modes are familiar.
*CASE STUDY: TWENTY FEET THAT REQUIRED AN ASCENT — HEAPS CANYON, 2021
In November 2021, three canyoneers were negotiating the final rappels at the exit of Heaps Canyon in Zion National Park. The first canyoneer rappelled past a small rock perch where he needed to land and re-anchor for the remaining descent. NPS reported that he ended up about 20 feet below the perch and was unable to ascend back to it.
Rescuers later found him suspended from the rope roughly 260 feet above Upper Emerald Pools; he was lowered and pronounced deceased. The other two canyoneers were stranded on the perch and were assisted to the ground. NPS stated that the exact cause of death remained under investigation.
Lesson Learned: The ability to ascend even a short distance is not an “advanced someday” skill. A missed ledge, stuck device, rope problem, or rigging mistake can create an immediate need to move upward on the rope you are already hanging from.
*CASE STUDY: REVERSING AN ASCENT — FISH CREEK / ZIG ZAG, 2017
On December 17, 2017, two canyoneers became stranded on a large wall in central Arizona after their rope stuck. One ascended to address the problem, but an overhang stopped his progress. He reported being unable to make a controlled transition back to descending. The compiled accounts describe a dangerous improvised escape from his ascenders, further rope loss, and a nighttime wait on a ledge. They attracted attention from a passing vehicle and were rescued by helicopter and a ground team. ICAD lists hypothermia among the consequences.
Lesson learned: Being able to climb a rope does not mean you can reverse the process safely or pass a difficult edge. Practice ascent, rest, a controlled return to rappel, and protected transitions under competent supervision. Never assume a partially retrieved, jammed rope is a sound ascent line. Plan for lost equipment and an independent way to summon help; a roadside canyon can still leave you unreachable.
Think it through: Can you safely return to descending if an ascent stops below an overhang?
