UNIT 3 OVERVIEW | Progressing & Advanced Canyoneering
Unit 1 taught you how to think before entering a canyon. Unit 2 put the essential tools and movement skills in your hands. Unit 3 is where the conversation changes again.
Advanced canyoneering is not simply “more rappels” or “bigger rappels.” The problems become more committing, the margin for error gets smaller, and the group may need skills that cannot be learned safely from a printed page. This unit is meant to show you what that advanced territory looks like – not convince you that reading about it makes you ready for it.
WHAT CHANGES
• Longer, more committing days
• More complex rope and rescue problems
• Keeper potholes and advanced movement
• Greater consequences when plans fail
WHAT THIS UNIT DOES
• Introduces advanced concepts
• Shows where professional training matters
• Builds awareness of specialized tools
• Helps you evaluate your own readiness
THE BOUNDARY: A lot of the skills in Unit 3 are intentionally introduced without being taught step-by-step. Recognition is useful. Competence still requires hands-on practice, mentorship, and repetition.
The goal is not to rush toward “advanced.” The goal is to understand what you do not know yet – and know what needs to happen before you commit to a canyon that expects those skills from you.
